The weakness extended to 2013, with first quarter real GDP falling 1.1% from the previous period, reducing 12-month growth to 1.1%, the lowest rate since 2009. Our writers will create an original "Civil Disobedience by Thoreau" essay for you Create order He felt that a person lived a good life by following his conscience and instincts. Thoreau also believed that materialism distracted people from living a good and moral life. In Walden, he says Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. Thoreau wrote about living a simple life and advocated against materialistic things that marked status in our society like wearing expensive things, earning high pay and owning land. Thoreau also proposed that the government should have little interference in ones life and he believed that too much government control can make your life more complicated. In Civil Disobedience, Thoreau states that when civil laws conflict with ones morals, one should follow his conscience. He writes, That government is best which governs not at all. Like other transcendentalists, Thoreau believed that less government involvement was best. In his famous Civil Disobedience and A plea for Captain John Brown, Thoreau writes about. In Civil Disobedience first titled Resistance to Civil Government, Thoreau responded to why he had gone to jail. As an abolitionist, he was against the Massachusetts poll tax and refused to pay it as a protest for slavery. He also protested against the Mexican American war that broke out in 1846 because he viewed it an aggressive war that aimed to add new slave territory in the United States. The authorities had ignored Thoreaus non-payment for months but in July of 1846, Concord constable Sam Staples ordered Thoreau to pay up. When Thoreau still failed to pay, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Middlesex County jail. However , He was released the next morning after an anonymous person paid his fine. Both slavery and the Mexican American war had played a prominent role in Thoreaus essay. In the time Thoreau wrote Civil Disobedience (the late 1840s), the country had become more polarized due to the growing number of northerners expressing anti-slavery opinions and the introduction of slavery friendly laws like the Fugitive Slave Law. In his essay Civil Disobedience, Thoreau argues that laws are human-made and are not always right. He states that there is a higher divine law and when those human-made laws fail, one should obey the higher law. Consequently, slavery no matter how legal it was then, it still violets the integrity and soul of the enslaved. Thoreau said, one cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slaves government also.

Why The Organic Of Organic Brands Are Safer For Human Health

Ten. Ten is the number of ingredients that has been banned in the U.S. for use in personal products due to health concerns. 1,110. That’s the number of ingredients banned by the European Union for the same reason. Due to growing concerns over the risk that different cosmetic ingredients pose to human health-- including cancer, birth defects, and reproductive problems- many consumers are turning towards organic cosmetic brands rather than the typical non-organic brands. This movement is known as the organic movement and has been around since the early twentieth century. The goal of the organic movement was to improve the living quality of humans and sustainability of the environment by promoting the use of organic products. These products†¦show more content†¦This leads to disastrous effects that will be discussed later in this essay. At the end of the day, makeup is washed off the skin, and these chemicals and compounds make their way through the wastewater into aqua tic ecosystems. As the amounts of these chemicals increase, aquatic ecosystems can end up damaged beyond repair. When a product runs out, the containers are thrown away into landfills and the plastics do not break down very fast. Since the use of cosmetics affects both human health and the environment, both human health and environmental impact must be considered when evaluating the safety of organic brands compared to non-organic brands. One major source of hazards to human health can be found in the ingredients of non-organic cosmetics. These ingredients have been shown to be significantly more hazardous to human health than those in organic cosmetics. Two ingredients found only in non-organic brands are parabens and phthalates. Parabens are found mainly in hair care products and skin lotions. These compounds are not water soluble and are able to be absorbed by the skin. Parabens have been linked to endocrine disruption, skin cancer, developmental problems, and reproductive problems (Campaign for safe cosmetics- parabens). As an endocrine disruptor, parabens have been linked to increase the cell division in cancer cells in the breasts. In one study, 19 out of 20 women

Reflections for Listening and Communication- myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theReflections for Listening and Verbal Communication. Answer: An example of my use of Interpersonal skills with listening and verbal communication includes a debate between friends where I had to listen to the thoughts of my peers before I could keep my points and convince them effectively that my stand on the subject was more positive. I used my reading skills to develop an academic document in the last assignment that I wrote. I read a lot of existing researchers on the subject that I was writing on. I exert some pressure on summarizing certain texts before I can use that information and ensure that I paraphrase a particular information rather than using as it is. My reading skills have always helped me in analysing existing researches in the best manner. Teamwork skills include the need for ensuring that the participation and contribution of every team member is acknowledged during a presentation. It also entails the need for giving an opportunity to every team member to present their contributions and thoughts on a given subject. I can recall the low confidence of one of my team members in giving the presentation on his parts. Hence, I used my interpersonal skills, to understand his apprehension and convinced him to give it a try at least once to overcome his nervousness and fear of public speaking. I used my team work skills of uplifting the spirits of the team and getting them to participate in a team presentation in class. An example of an assessment where I had to choose between my social relationships and professionalism. It includes the demand of information on one of my clients by my friend. Although my friend and his family would benefit largely from the information I could give and the company would not have suffered in any manner, I would not mix my social and professional life at all. I would explain the situation to my friend and tell him exactly how I feel. The task helped me in understanding my morals better. It assisted me in understanding how important it is to follow ethics otherwise all friends tend to take you for granted every now and then. It is best to put a stop to the sharing of professional information and lay boundaries in the beginning itself. The skills that I learnt from different cultures was the ability to respect other cultures, understand the perspectives of others and the adaptability to be able to become sensitive towards the strong feeling of others in a group. Cultural diversity can be seen clearly in every part of the world. It is an excellent way to become a more rational individual and using the same to empower oneself with better communication skills that can eventually help the society and the peers both. I used ICT technologies by researching on the subject and ensuring that I understand every topic with depth before discussing it in detail. An example is the marketing topic that falls under the category of Commerce and Business Administration. The two examples of communication and collaboration technologies that were learnt include Mobility and Virtual Collaboration. These would help the corporates to give a new direction to innovation, offer a competitive edge to companies and assist them in cutting down costs to a large extent. The two major things that I liked about the Unit was the importance of understanding and integration of Cultural Diversity in the day to day life of individuals and the ability to understand the ethical code of conduct in varied scenarios. I strongly believe that this knowledge would help me in becoming a better individual personally and professionally. These factors have also made me a more open-minded person and stronger individual who understands the meaning of ethics and respects people. The two suggested improvements for the Unit could be the integration of processes or step by step introductions of how a person can improve the aspects that he/she lacks. Another improvement could be the addition of certain examples of existing leaders who have used the varied skills to become a better person. Relating a subject with real life stories always adds a motivational aspect to the discussion in every unit.

Anti-Trust Legislation Essays - Software, Computing, Business

Anti-Trust Legislation As many people have noticed, recently there has been a huge focus in the media on Bill Gates, and his huge Microsoft Corporation. This past Friday, May 22, 1998, a federal judge combined two lawsuits and set a trial date for September 8, 1998. This trial date will address a government request for a preliminary injunction concerning Windows 98 as well as broader issues. The Sherman Anti-trust Act was passed in 1890. Then in 1914 the Clayton Act was passed to help with Anti-trust Cases. Anti-trust Lawsuits are few and far between, but recently cases against Microsoft are stacking up all around the world. In 1890 the Sherman Anti-trust Act was passed, but it was not until much later that it was enforced. The Act stated "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations." The Sherman Anti-trust act was too vague and too difficult to enforce. The Clayton Act of 1914 helped this problem by making a more specific attack on monopolies. Things like predatory price-cutting, price discrimination, and acquisition of stock in a competing company with intent to destroy competition all became illegal. John D. Rockefeller is a prime example of monopolies in US History. By buying out competitors, or driving them out of business he obtained nearly 100 percent of the market in oil refining. The Standard Oil Company was eventually forced to dissolve into smaller companies after the case Standard Oil Company vs. United States, 221 U.S. 1 (1911). Before this case the Anti-trust Laws had not been put to much use, which was not to the benefit of consumers. Now the spotlight is on Microsoft Corporation, and their apparent attempt to take over the Internet browser market. Concerns aroused recently because of the expected release of Windows 98, which uses Microsoft Internet Explorer in almost every application it runs. The US government has seemingly acknowledged Microsoft's monopoly of operating systems and let it go by because of lack of competition in the market. But now new issues are at stake, should Microsoft be allowed to expand its already almost monopoly into yet another field in the computer industry? With the incorporation of Microsoft Internet Explorer into the Microsoft operating system Windows 98, Netscape Communications Corporation felt vulnerable, and filed complaints with the Justice Department. Once the investigations were initiated, it seemed flocks of people jumped the bandwagon to attack the alleged Microsoft Corporation Monopoly. 20 State Attorney Generals and the District of Columbia, along with the Justice Department have filed against Microsoft Corporation. Japan has also filed an Antitrust Lawsuit against Microsoft. It seems that everywhere Microsoft is, there looms a bit of concern for the consumers and their futures. Currently 90 percent of the world's personal computers run on Microsoft operating systems. The remaining ten percent of the industry is divided between Apple's Macintosh, IBM's OS/2, and Unix. The federal and state antitrust regulators are arguing that Microsoft has illegally used the popularity of its operating systems to eliminate its competition in the software industry. Many economists feel that these lawsuits against Microsoft Corporation could be as revolutionary as those against Bell Telephone in 1984 and John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company in 1911. Microsoft Corporation however, disagrees, arguing that the changes being demanded by federal and state government will take months to perform and would cause the software to be useless. Microsoft clings strongly to their beliefs that Windows 98 cannot succeed without Internet Explorer. "Such an operating system - which would take many months (if not years) to develop and test - would bear little, if any, resemblance to Windows 98 because Internet Explorer technologies are such a critical element of that product," Microsoft wrote. Although it may be true that Windows 98 is based around Internet Explorer, should the government allow Microsoft to sell its product and gain more market share? One option that federal and state governments gave Microsoft was to have the Windows 98 package be sold with the Netscape Navigator Browser, Microsoft's main competitor. This request was seen as ridiculous by Mark Murray, a spokesman at Microsoft headquarters, who has been quoted as saying, "that's like the government forcing Coke to put two cans of Pepsi in every six-pack." The only choices being offered to Microsoft at this point are to "unbundle" Windows 98 and Internet Explorer, or to add in the Netscape Navigator Browser. The unbundling process is what Microsoft Corporation says will take seven months to handle, and therefore had asked

Plus, I believe laughter truly is the best medicine, so anything that I can create that might cause another person to smile, or laugh out loud, is okay by me. What kind of response has the strip had?
